Tony Smith began bookselling at Hall’s bookshop in Tunbridge Wells during vacations from reading English at university, and moved to Heywood Hill’s bookshop in Mayfair in 1995. He’s lucky enough to live only 7 minutes from the shop, if he’s riding his Brompton bicycle and the wind’s in the right direction.

Aimi Engineer began bookselling in her gap year and never quite managed to stop. She is the only member of staff who doesn’t cycle, but she gets plenty of reading done on the tube.

Jane McMorland Hunter works part-time at the shop, having previously worked at Crockatt and Powell, Pan, Books for Cooks and Hatchards, where she began as a Christmas temp and stayed for 23 years. When not working in the shop she writes books on the good things in life: gardening, needlecraft and cookery which are available to buy here. She lives nearer the shop than Tony but her bicycle ride takes longer.

David Gibb works in the shop at weekends. He is a sculptor but has also worked at Pan, Hatchards and André Deutsch. His cycle ride takes 25 to 29 minutes, but he lives further away than Tony or Jane.
